Internet Protocol Address Policy

Policy: Governance of Internet Protocol (IPv4 and IPv6) Addresses at the University

Policy Statement:  Governance for all Internet Protocol (IPv4 and IPv6) Addresses is the jurisdiction of the Chief Information Officer for the University. The Office of the University CIO is the Administrative and Assigning Authority for the University. Sole determination for allocation or resolution of conflicts related to IP address space is the Office of the University Chief Information Officer.

Comment:  This includes all (IPv4 and IPv6) address space, regardless of history. IPv4 addresses at the University may include early direct assignments from pre-ARIN (American Registry for Internet Numbers) bodies, commercial carrier assignments or direct assignments made to individuals within the University. Once routed on the University Network and to external destinations, the broader liability and security issues associated with IP address space assignments are University issues and not specific to any school, department or local network contact. See the policy below for obtaining (IP) Address Assignments.

Policy: Obtaining Internet Protocol (IP) Address Assignments

Policy Statement: The Administrative Authority for University Internet Protocol (IP) Address Assignments is University Information Systems. Interfacing with public Internet Authorities such as ARIN (American Registry for Internet Numbers) is a University function. All requests for IPv4 or IPv6 address space to be routed over the University Network go to University Information Systems.

Requests can be sent netmanager@harvard.edu

Comment:  University Information Systems does assign address space to operational authorities within the campus. Operational authorities can be a school, department, or local networking contact that received an IP address assignment from University Information Systems. The operational authority is responsible for the administration of the IP address space within their operational area of responsibility as part of the University network. All requests for address space will be reviewed and before a new allocation of address space is made, current allocations to the operational authorit y will be assessed and verified that they are being used in an efficient manner following ARIN and RFC2050 guidelines.
